CARL LARSSON-GÅRDEN
ART BROUGHT TO LIFE
Carl Larsson, 1853–1919, was one of Sweden’s most esteemed artists. His talent enabled him to paint his way up and out of the Stockholm slum where he grew up. In France, he met Karin Bergöö, who was to become his wife. She was a skilful textiles designer and both were very interested in interior decoration and home furnishing. In 1888, they were able to take over Lilla Hyttnäs, a small house in Sundborn, just outside Falun.
Together they created a home here, which, at that time, was both different and unusual. The rooms are full of light and colour and the cosy atmosphere is noticeable. For Carl, his home symbolised the happy environment where his family could live their lives in harmony, a dream he, himself, never experienced as a child. This environment has become a source of inspiration to home decorators around the world.
Time stands still but everything is the same since the Larssons departed this life. But Carl Larsson-gården is still very much alive. The house is run and cared for by Carl and Karin Larsson’s family and is a much appreciated tourist attraction for visitors from near and far.
As an artist, Carl Larsson is best known and most loved for his paintings of family life, the daily round as well as the festive occasions. In painting after painting, he portrays his wife, the seven children and his home. His water colours are exhibited and praised all over the world. Parts of the house and a great number of Carl Larsson’s paintings were shown at a very successful exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, a couple of years ago.
